Sports Directors

Before the partition of India, football was the only popular game. Till the shifting of the district head quarter from its old location to the present site, notable amongst the elderly people engaged in the management of football were Abinash Babu, Nirmal Krishna, Shamsuddin Mokter, Kazi Mahfuzul Haq, Dr. Mujibul Haq, Ahammad Raja, Jane Alam, Dr. Adiluzzaman, Nitaipada, Mafizul Haider Chowdhury, Shahiduddin Eskander Kachi, Ruhul Amin Katu, Sahabuddin Eskander Bhulu, Osman Ghani Dhanu, Ohid Uddin Khasru, Mulkutur Rahman, Saifuddin Bachu, Rafiqudin Ahmed, Mohammad Hanif Latu, Manik Chowdhury and Kalu Mea. Afterwards, some of the aforesaid football directors shouldered the responsibility of managing Volley-ball, Cricket and Badminton. Professor Mrittunjoy Sarker, Badiur Rahman, M A Rauf, Shahidul Islam Tanu, Nurul Islam Kalu and Manish Sen are to be noted.

Senior Footballers

The Footballers whose performance in this field is still rememberd by the elderly people were Rasul Mea, Ramada, Prananath, Manu Nag, Satish, Girendra, Birendra, Bijoy, Tota, Iman Ali, Jalal, Mostaque, Shajahan, Jiten, Abinash, Arun Kumar, Nurul Haq, Kalu, Hossain Mohammad, Jhunu, Hasu, Rashid, Notu, Heera, Raja Mea, Lutfor, Jabbar, Jatindra, Anil, Khair, Quasem Daroga, Syed Master, Sudhan, Sarwar, Sowmen Chitta, Sekander Baku, Mahboob, Shah Sekander, Khurshid, Bara Latu, Sakayet and Bikash. Later, the names of Mafiz, Kachi, Bhulu, Salu, Mozam, Nabi Chowdhury, Kamal and Akbar are worth mentioning.

It is heard from the old people that there were some renowned Gymnasts who exhibited their performances.

During the ‘non co-operation movement’ many of them were arrested. At that time the British Govt. banned the Gymnastic activities. Notable Gymnasts were Bhupal, Gopal, Haresh, Mahboob, Erfan, Gazi Siddique, Mafizullah, M A Rauf, Jiban, Nikhil, Khalekuzzaman, Quamruzzaman, Nannu, Wasim, Sajal, Farhad, Sabuj, Sumi, Dulal, Tanu, Dilip, Jahangir, Ekram, Babul, Madhu, Majnu, Swapan, Bashar, Bachu and Selim.

Volley-ball

Prominent volley-ball players are Jagadish, Mrittunjoy Sarker, Tareq Bachu, Momin, Kamal, Ebad, Manir, Katu Manir, Manindra, Malaya, Gouranga, Chhadu, Montu, Yusuf, Neju, Khabir, Harun, Selim, Babu, Taher, Nihar, Kanchan, Habib, Kalim,, Anwar, Yusuf Ali, Milan, Bhulu, Miron, Kazi Didar, Bahar, Iqbal, Swapan, Nasir, Mir Shaheen (Senior), Jahangir, Shaheen (Junior), Sanjib and Mahmud.

Cricket

In the field of Cricket, Kanu, Nannu, Pearu, Karim, Samad, Taslim, Bulbul, Shawkat, Nakib, Zanial, Farhad, Yusuf, Sablu, Kislu, Shah Alam, Jahangir, Bahar, Kanchan, Milan, Shankar, Tipu, Biru, Mamun, Morshed, Harun, Ehtesham, Jhunu, Aslam, Sanu and Zahir play in the district team and are locally known for their good performance.

Hockey

Hockey players of national status are Nurul Islam, Anwar, Dr. Jasim and Jafar. Besides, Dulal , Babu, Bachu, Babar, Bahadur, Nannu, Liakat, Nasim, Sablu, Jhunu, Sweet, Rajen, Kanchan, Faisal, Parvez, Bulbul, Taslim, Mir Quasem, Jahangir, Faiz, Helal, Morshed, Alamgir, Rupak, Shahab, Hossain, Kawsar, Monowar and Mokter are notable Hockey players.

Basket-ball

In the field of Basket-ball, the notable players were Himanshu, Mukit, Shailendra, Nepal, Prafulla, Nirmal, Samar, Mahbub, Bukhtiar, Narayan, Prabir, Kabir, Kanchan, Latu, Jhumu, Jhunu, Bhanu, Anwar, Sanker, Sajal, Rakib, Dilip, Sanjib, Milon, Rabi, Rajib and Mithu.  

Badminton

Badminton was introduced long ago at Noakhali and expert players were M A Rauf, Katu, Gopal, Dhirendra, Manu, Nilu, Kanu, Miran and Shahabuddin. Later on Taju, Latu (Senior), Mahi, Haider, Latu (Junior), Manu, Monir, Anwar, Bablu, Benu and Pranab. Recently, Selim, Mukul, Noman, Bahar, Moni, Kalu, Kislu, Taleb, Pannu, Nasim, Rubel, Rashed, Sharmin, Poly, Selina and Parul have made their marks in the game.

Table-tennis

Among senior table-tennis players  table-tennis,  Abdul Malek, S A Khandaker, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Alauddin and Badiar Rahman created a new chapter in the game. After that, Chapal, Nayeem, Sabuz (Senior), Pavel, Suman, Mukul, Morshed,Khairul, Bappi, Syeed, Subrata, Yusuf, Anwar, Biplob, Moni, Tareq, Khokan, Sabuz (Junior), Zannat, Tamanna, Johra, Imran, Bishu, Shaheda, Selina,Jesmin, Rina and Shilpi have made remarkable achievement.

Chess

Zamshed, Tarakandu, Habibul, Aziz and Kachi are some of the chess players of Noakhali.

Athlets

The athlets who, by participating in various competitions on behalf of the Noakhali District Team, have made remarkable achievements from time to time are Ebad Mea, Hasem, Katu, Nurun Nabi, Sacchu, Sankar, Sukla, Belayet, Faruk, Ruhul Amin, Kafil, Asaduzzaman, Tariq, Rahim, Azad, Matin, Malek, Momen, Dilip, Sharif , Bahar, Huda, Bishnu, Iqbal, Mafiz, Shahid, Milon, Sajal, Amir, Motahar, Bachu, Khair, Debabrata, Ibrahim, Zahir, Sabbir, Bhulu, Swapan, Taher, Sabuz, Babar and Bipul. Among others are Nazneen, Trishna, Moitri, Ruzneen, Kohinoor, Siddiqua, Vikarunnesa, Ismat Ara Parul, Basanti, Swapna, Shyama, Rehena, Marzina, Yasmin, Roushan and Parvin.

Swimming

Among the swimmers of Noakhali the names of Nitai, Mrinal, Taher and Siddique are notable

Kabadi

Once Kabadi, locally known as HA-DU-DU, was a very popular game in Noakhali. At that time Habu Bali, Chhadu, Osman, Eshaq, Jalal, Raja Mea, Rashid, Taju and Khair were popular throughout the district.

Sports Organizations

Before the partition of India, Noakhali Mohamedan Sporting Club was the oldest traditional sports organization in the district. After liberation the organization is still in existence with its past glory. Eminent politicians like- late Abdul Malek Ukil, M A Rashid, Advocate Manzurul Haq, Enayet Ullah and many others were associated with this club. Thereafter, Sonapur Sporting Club was established. After the shifting of Noakhali District Town to the present site, some newly established clubs namely, Young Star Club, Raushan Club, Pourasava Club, 

Noakhali Merchant Club, Uzzalpur Juba Sangha, Nabarun, Maijdi Juba Sangha, Pragati Sangsad, Collectorate, WAPDA, Police AC and Azad Sporting Club were active for several years, but now they are almost inactive. Of the sports organizations still existing in the dull sports environment, Mohamedan Sporting, Sonapur Sporting, Brothers Union, Abahani, Zhanker, Players Club, Maijdi Merchant Club, Dhrubatara, Lawyers Colony, Zonaki Club, Young Sporting Club, Babar Sporting, Provati Club, Friends Club and Chalantika Club are organizationally well-known in the sports arena. In the construction of Shahid Bhulu Stadium, Late Shahiduddin Eskander (Kachi Bhai) and later on Saiful Azam Jahangir, General Secretary of Zilla Sports Association, took utmost care.
